Melodic Ideas and Comping Patterns for GUITAR in 7 (2+2+3) with Quarter notes and Eight notes
This part of the “Method for Improvisation in Odd Time Signatures” focuses on the second group of Odd Time Signatures, grouped as 2+2+3 in “7”.
Whether the meter in 7 is written as 7/2, 7/4, 7/8, or 7/16 depends on the tempo; e.g., 7/2 and 7/4 are generally used for slower tempos, and 7/8 and 7/16 for quicker tempos.
In this section, we will explore various Melodic ideas and Comping patterns using the 2+2+3 groups, using notes up to 8th-note values. Further studies will focus on numerous patterns with 16th notes.
The basic idea in this set of exercises is borrowed from the 4/4 backbeat/swing pattern, in which the comping instruments usually play on the 2nd and 4th beats. In this meter (7/8) for the groupings (2+2+3), the equivalent of the upbeat is the 5th note (1st in the group of 3). The bass usually performs on the down beat(s) 1st & 3rd.
Students are also highly encouraged to examine other parts (Piano Accompaniment, Bass lines, and Drum grooves) than those applicable to their own instrument to understand how they all fit into the “big” picture as an ensemble.
Through these very carefully selected examples, exercises, and etudes, the “complexity” and the “awkwardness” of these meters will soon be replaced with a new and fresh outlook about these “strange”/”odd” rhythms.
On request, the student will also have access to Play-along tracks that accompany the exercises and make practicing much more fun.
